There is no cure for shingles but there are options to reduce complications of the disease. Suffering patients can use over-the-counter medications which may help relieve the pain. More severe pain will require prescription analgesics.
Patients suffering from shingles may also be prescribed antiviral medications, to help shorten the length and severity of the disease. Unfortunately, their effectiveness is limited. Ideally, these medications must be taken as soon as the rash emerges. However, many patients don’t normally recognize the rashes as shingles until it’s too late. In other words, most patients will still undergo this painful condition for most of its duration.
Additionally, while the medications can help address the symptoms of the disease, complications are another matter. If the complications arise, they would need other forms of treatment.
